چکیده

SCHMIDT-NIELSEN, BODIL, AND ERIK SKADHAUGE, Function of the excretory system of the crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) Am. ,T. Physiol. 212(5): 973-980. I 967 .-Glomerular filtration rate (GFR), tubular and cloaca1 functions were studied, during normal conditions, water loading, salt loading, and isosmotic expansion of the extracellular fluid volume. Na+, K+, Cl-, NH& and osmolality were determined in ureteral and cloaca1 urine. GFR varied little compared to that of other amphibious reptiles. It increased about 20 y0 after a water load corresponding to I 07~ body wt, and showed no increase after an isosmotic load. It decreased only 40 y0 after dehydration ( I o y. of body wt). The tubules have little or no capacity for regulating the osmolality or electrolyte composition of the urine. Ureteral urine osmolality remained around 807~ of the plasma osmolality under all conditions. The electrolyte concentration of the ureteral urine varied only slightly with the variations in salt load. Cloaca1 absorption appeared to be more regulated. Under normal conditions Na+ and Clwere almost completely resorbed in the cloaca leaving NHA+ and probably HCO3 behind. After salt load Na+ and Clresorption in the cloaca was less complete. The kidney function of the crocodile resembles that of terrestrial reptiles more than that of other amphibious reptiles. The lack of regulation of glomerular filtration rate and the tubular osmolality may be characteristic for uricotelic reptiles. It may also reflect the ancestry, since the crocodile is a descendant of the terrestrial ruling reptiles.

The Drosophila fork head domain protein crocodile is required for the establishment of head structures.

The fork head (fkh) domain defines the DNA-binding region of a family of transcription factors which has been implicated in regulating cell fate decisions across species lines. We have cloned and molecularly characterized the crocodile (croc) gene which encodes a new family member from Drosophila. croc is expressed in the head anlagen of the blastoderm embryo under the control of the anterior, ...

Effect of Intra-Peritoneal Injection of Chitosan Nanoparticle Loaded with Leishmania major Excretory-Secretory Antigens on Macrophage Function in Exposure to Parasites in BALB/c Mice.

Background: Leishmania major (L.major) is a causative agent of leishmaniasis. The disease has now become a public health problem. Modulation of the immune responses to inhibit the infection or the proliferation of the parasite is an effective way to overcome the leishmaniosis. Leishmania parasite secretory-excretory antigens are responsible for immune system modulation; therefore, they are u...

Oral and cloacal microflora of wild crocodiles Crocodylus acutus and C. moreletii in the Mexican Caribbean.

Bacterial cultures and chemical analyses were performed from cloacal and oral swabs taken from 43 American crocodiles Crocodylus acutus and 28 Morelet's crocodiles C. moreletii captured in Quintana Roo State, Mexico. We recovered 47 bacterial species (28 genera and 14 families) from all samples with 51.1% of these belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Fourteen species (29.8%) were detecte...

Genetic characterization of captive Cuban crocodiles (Crocodylus rhombifer) and evidence of hybridization with the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

There is a surprising lack of genetic data for the Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer), especially given its status as a critically endangered species. Samples from captive individuals were used to genetically characterize this species in comparison with other New World crocodilians. Partial mitochondrial sequence data were generated from cyt-b (843 bp) and the tRNA(Pro)- tRNA(Phe)-D-loop re...

Status and conservation of the American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, in Belize

The status of the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) in the coastal zone of Belize was investigated from July 1996 to October 1997. Two hundred and sixty-two crocodiles were observed during spotlight surveys of 952.2 km of the survey route (0.28 crocodiles/km). Encounter rates were highest in the Turne€e Atoll, and low to moderate elsewhere. Most nesting occurs on elevated beach ridges in t...
